I know it’s been a minute since I’ve posted anything. Don’t fear. I do have quite a number of posts coming up but first, I want to fill you guys in on what’s going on in my life right now.
In November 2014, a student film festival called Campus Movie Fest came to my university. The basic outline of this film festival is that students are given the equipment they need by Campus Movie Fest to create a 5 minute film. The catch is that the film has to be made in one week. At the end of the week, students submit their films and from those films, the top 16 are selected to premiere at the Campus screening. At the campus screening, the top four films out of the 16 are chosen and given the Jury Critic Award which means they are moving on to the national competition being held in Hollywood, California that following summer.
Well.. guess who made top four at their university?
Ya girl right here.
I wasn’t expecting to win top four at all. I just wanted to make the first cut honestly. Actually, I just wanted to submit a film to say hey, at least I tried. When I won at my school, I got on stage and couldn’t even form words because I was still trying to process everything. I was actually being invited to Hollywood for my film.
My film “For the Girls” matters to me because two of my loves came together: film and spoken word. “For the Girls” was a spoken word piece that I wrote a while ago when I was feeling really down on myself. My body image and self-esteem was suffering. When I can’t handle anything I usually turn to writing or music and that time it was writing. “For the Girls” is basically a shout out to other girls who are feeling down on themselves and need to be reminded that they are beautiful and valued.
When “For the Girls” premiered at Campus Movie Fest, I was surprised to see so many people touched by this film–especially girls. In terms of cinematography, my film is mediocre and amateur compared to my peers which was another reason why my win was shocking to me. It makes me feel so happy that my film was able to touch at people’s heartstrings and inspire them to feel better about themselves.
Since my film made top four, it will be premiering in Hollywood, CA and will compete against other films that made top four at their universities. The thing is… I have to pay my own way. I have to pay for my hotel, plane ticket, festival tickets. Everything, girl. And naturally, being a college student, I don’t have the funds for that lying around.
Here’s where you all can help me.
I have a GoFundMe campaign happening to raise money for my trip. It would mean the absolute WORLD to me if you donate what you can to my cause. Three of my friends will be accompanying me on this trip and there also college students who do not have all that money.
Anything will suffice, from 50 cents to 50 dollars. Anything!
